You can connect one or two drirectly to your computer available USB 2.0 ports without problems. I have about Five USB External Drives connecting to an Active USB Hub and all works as intended. I am older than the Earth :)

I just transferred all the karaoke songs into a portable (2.5") usb external HDD. Somehow, some songs freeze (and then resume after a couple of seconds) during play. This never happened when I was using a bigger (3.5") external HDD. Does anyone have this problem? I wonder if the slower RPM has anything to do with it. I read somewhere that it doesn't make that much of a difference if you're using USB 2.0. (It's not necessary to spin fast on a smaller drive).
2.5" HDD: 5400rpm, no power adapter needed. 3.5" HDD: 7200rpm, need power adapter.

. What is the brand name of your Hard Drive? . How old is your computer? . Make sure you you hard drive is connected to USB V2.0 port. . BTW - I use three 2.5" Western Digital USB external Hard Drives (No External Power Needed) connecting to various computers without any problems.
3.5" HDD: 7200rpm, need power adapter.

I'm using WD 500GB (2.5") portable HD without any problems. Make sure you connect to USB2.0 Port on your computer ... USB1.1 has very low connection speed therefore you might have problem Another thing, Turn off other programs including the ones run in the background My computers and PS3 are fighting cancersHere's how http://folding.stanford.edu/

I'm also using WD Elements 500Gb. I have a 2 yrs old laptop (Dell Vostro 1400: Core 2 Duo, 2gb ram, windows xp) so I'm assuming all the ports on the laptop are USB 2.0. How do I check if the port I'm using is USB 1.1 ?
It's good to know that your external 5400rpm drives are working fine. I was about to take out the drive and use it as an internal drive. I'm glad I don't have to go through that trouble.

Let's clarify this: You use the same laptop with the other HD (Internal HD?) and TKaraoke is working fine --- Correct? My computers and PS3 are fighting cancersHere's how http://folding.stanford.edu/

Yes, same laptop. I'm not worrying too much about this issue though. It only happens to a couple of songs.
